Home care fees explained

August 17, 2020

No doubt you are interested in the types of fees that apply to your care – all providers have items that are included in your budget to ensure you receive efficient and quality services. We will always explain how much they are and what they are for, plus be available to answer questions you have about your statements, giving you peace of mind.

Understanding the fees involved

In 2020, there are almost 1000 home care providers to choose from and although the way they charge you is governed by the Government, they all have different ways of packaging up your funds. Understanding the nuances and having options is really important. We have compiled some of the most confusing terms around fees and charges and pulled them together with some simple explanations.

Another great way to understand how a provider charges is to ask for an example statement before you commit to a provider, is it easy to read and understand? Are they using clear and simple language? Can you change the way you package your funds if your situation or needs change?

How much does Home care cost?

Depending on your circumstances, you may be required to contribute to the cost of your home care. You may be required to pay a Basic Daily Fee for your government funded home care package. The basic daily fee is 85% of the single person rate of the basic age pension, however many people enquire about this with their home care provider once their package is assigned – this fee only applies to home care packages funded by the Australian Government.

Home care packages are subsidised by the government, but in some cases, you will be asked to pay something towards the cost of the service – this is called an Income Tested Care Fee. The amount you pay depends on your income, assets and circumstances.
