About the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).
At myHomecare, we understand there may be times in our life when we need a little help. This may be to get the day started, getting out and about or help around the home. CHSP works by maximising independence through entry-level support to enhance your quality of life in your own home. As a leading provider, myHomecare has been approved by the Government to deliver subsidised care and services.
Who can access the CHSP?
Eligibility for CHSP services is based on your needs and age. If you’re having trouble with everyday tasks and feel that one or two services could improve your health and wellbeing, CHSP could be right for you.
To be eligible for CHSP program, you must be aged:
- 65 years or older (50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people), or
- 50 years or older (45 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people) and on a low income, homeless, or at risk of being homeless.
A face-to-face assessment by trained assessors will determine eligibility and ensure that the right CHSP services are made available to those that need them. If your needs are more complex, a Home Care Package could be a better option for you.
What costs are involved?
If you are eligible, you’re expected to contribute to the cost of your home care services if you can afford to. The cost depends on the type of support and the provider at a subsidised rate. Entry-level services like household jobs and meal preparation will typically be low cost with a much lower hourly rate than if you paid directly out of pocket. More complex services like home maintenance work will cost much more. We have our expert team to help you with your individual needs and determine how much you may need to contribute.
How soon until you can get help at home?
After you have been assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT), you will be provided with either one or multiple referral codes. Depending on your individual needs, we will arrange home visits to complete assessment with Care Managers as soon as possible to determine how your care will be delivered. You can expect to commence services within 2 weeks of your in-home assessment by myHomecare.

The CHSP is designed for older Australians who need minor home care services to maintain their independence and continue living at home. If you require assistance with everyday tasks but don’t need a Home Care Package, CHSP could be an excellent fit. It provides a range of basic home care services tailored to your specific needs, helping you manage daily tasks and enhancing your quality of life. To determine your eligibility and whether CHSP is right for you, a face-to-face assessment of your care needs and health conditions will be conducted.
The CHSP aims to provide older Australians with the necessary support to remain living at home as long as possible. It delivers a range of entry-level services focusing on assisted daily living, promoting independence, and enhancing the quality of life. By offering tailored support, the CHSP helps older people maintain their skills, health, and wellbeing, reducing the need for more complex care services and supports ageing in place with dignity and comfort.
Service providers for CHSP are organisations approved by the Australian Government to help you access CHSP services. These providers can range from not-for-profit organisations, private companies, and government agencies, each meeting quality standards and safety standards. They are skilled in offering a variety of services, from personal care to speech therapy, ensuring seniors receive personalised, compassionate care aligned with their specific needs and preferences.
The CHSP and Home Care Package (HCP) cater to different levels of care needs for older Australians.
CHSP provides entry-level, basic support for those needing minor assistance with everyday tasks to maintain independence at home. In addition, CHSP is a government-subsidised program, allowing individuals to access services at discounted fees.
On the other hand, Home Care Packages are designed for individuals with more complex, ongoing care needs. It offers a personalised, comprehensive range of services tailored to the recipient’s specific requirements. HCP covers the full cost of your services, though recipients may be required to contribute to the cost of their package through income-tested fees.
In essence, CHSP is for basic, short-term support, while Home Care Packages provide a broader, more flexible range of services for ongoing care requirements, with the costs reflecting these differences.
